Sejarah

Area kota Albany sekarang dulunya dihuni oleh Creek Indians, yang menyebut tempat itu Thronateeska berdasarkan kata "flint" karena penemuan bahan mineral flint di dekat sungai.[5] Orang Creek menggunakan flintstone ini untuk membuat peralatan dan senjata misalnya kepala anak panah.

Pemukiman orang kulit putih dimulai oleh Nelson Tift, seorang pengusaha dari Connecticut, yang menguasai tanah sepanjang sungai Flint pada bulan Oktober 1836 setelah pengusiran orang Indian. Orang Creek dipaksa untuk pindah ke Indian Territory di sebelah barat sungai Mississippi. Tift menamai kota barunya "Albany" seperti ibukota negara bagian New York; keduanya sama-sama terletak di hulu sungai-sungai yang dapat dilayari. Alexander Shotwell membuat tata kota pada tahun 1836. Geography

East Albany is located in a triangle between the Flint River, The Liberty Express Way, and Oglethorpe Blvd. Its main road is East Broad Avenue.[52][diragukan]

District statistics

It is segregated from the rest of the city by the Flint River and the large highways that surround it. The area has little economic activity, thus poverty is widespread. Hingga 2000, the poverty rate is at 45.3%, and the median household income is at $19,601.00. The population 10,547 people with 90.9% African Americans. 33.9% of persons are under the age of 18, and 40.9% of these people belong to single parent households. The district supports 1.1% persons born outside of the U.S. Education rate is low with 41.0% of adults without a high school diploma. Only 5.8% of people have a college degree. Unemployment is at 18.6%. Home ownership rate is at 36.7%.[53]
