Slipknot adalah sebuah band beraliran Nu Metal dari Des Moines, Iowa yang dibentuk pada bulan September 1995.
Band ini dibentuk oleh sang pemain perkusi Shawn Crahan dan sang pemain bass Paul Gray. Setelah beberapa kali mengganti anggotanya, band ini memiliki anggota tetap sejak 1999 yaitu: Sid Wilson, Joey Jordison, Paul Gray, Chris Fehn, Jim Root, Craig Jones, Shawn "Clown" Crahan, Mick Thomson, dan Corey Taylor.
Namun sang pemain bass Paul Gray meninggal dunia pada 24 Mei 2010 karena overdosis dan digantikan oleh mantan gitaris Donnie Steele dari 2011-2014. Joey Jordison keluar dari band pada 12 Desember 2013 tanpa alasan yang jelas diikuti dengan keluarnya Donnie Steele selama sesi perekaman album kelima .5: The Gray Chapter dengan alasan ingin fokus berumah tangga. Kini Slipknot touring bersama musisi pengganti Alessandro "Vman" Venturella pada bass dan Jay Weinberg pada drums. Slipknot dikenal sebagai band yang selalu menarik perhatian, gaya musik agresif, energik serta kacau dalam pertunjukkan aksi panggungnya. Band ini dengan cepat sukses setelah merilis album debut mereka pada tahun 1999. Pada album yang kedua di tahun 2001, Iowa, membuat band ini menjadi lebih populer. Setelah itu Slipknot kembali pada tahun 2004 dengan albumnya Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses). Pada tahun 2008 dengan album keempat, All Hope Is Gone, yang dalam debutnya mendapatkan peringkat satu Billboard 200 chart. Setelah istirahat panjang, Slipknot merilis album kelima .5: The Chapter Gray, pada tahun 2014. Band ini telah merilis sebuah album live berjudul 9.0: Live, sebuah album kompilasi berjudul Antennas to Hell, dan empat live DVDs. Slipknot menjadi headlined di UK (United Kingdom) dalam Download Festival sebanyak tiga kali.
Band ini pernah mendapatkan Grammy Awards untuk kategori Best Metal Performance untuk lagu "Before I Forget" pada tahun 2006.
