Swedia telah merupakan sebuah kerajaan selama hampir satu milenium. Sistem perpajakannya diatur oleh Riksdag (parlemen). Riksdag terdiri dari empat majelis, terdiri dari wakil-wakil dari 4 kategori: masyarakat awam, bangsawan, klerik, dan townsmen, sampai 1866 ketika Swedia menjadi monarki konstitusional dengan sebuah parlemen bikameral. Majelis pertamanya dipilih langsung dalam pemilihan nasional setiap empat tahun.

Daerah Swedia terletak di belahan bumi utara dan di utara, terdapat wilayah di dalam Lingkaran Arktik namun beriklim sedang.
Di sebelah timur, wilayahnya dibatasi Laut Baltik dan Teluk Bothnia. Batasnya di barat dengan Norwegia adalah Pegunungan Skandinavia. Kepadatan penduduk cenderung lebih tinggi di daerah selatan yang mayoritas agrikultur dan semakin ke utara, hutan semakin lebat.

Pada 12 Agustus 2004, populasi Swedia mencapai angka 9 juta jiwa dan memiliki tingkat harapan hidup yang tinggi dibanding negara-negara umumnya. Penduduk aslinya adalah Orang Sami. Sebagian besar orang Finn Swedia adalah pendatang atau keturunan pendatang dari abad ke-20 namun terdapat sekitar 50.000 suku Finn asli yang merupakan salah satu minoritas di Swedia.
Setelah Perang Dunia II, Swedia banyak menerima pendatang terutama karena perang di negara lain seperti dari Irak, Iran, Yugoslavia, dan Palestina serta orang-orang Amerika Serikat yang tidak ikut Perang Vietnam. Namun, kelompok imigran terbesar adalah suku Finn dari Finlandia.
