Henry Charles Bukowski (16 Agustus 1920 – 9 Maret 1994) adalah seorang penyair dan novelis Amerika yang lahir di Jerman. Cara penulisannya sangat dipengaruhi oleh keadaan kota tempat tinggalnya, Los Angeles. Bukowski telah menghasilkan ribuan puisi, ratusan cerita pendek, dan enam novel, pada akhirnya memiliki lebih dari 50 buku yang sudah diterbitkan.

Bukowski meninggal pada usia 73 tahun pada 1994 akibat penyakit yang dideritanya leukemia.

Kehidupan Pribadi

Layaknya tokoh alter ego dalam karyanya, Henry Chinaski, Bukowski seorang alkoholik. Sepanjang hidupnya ia terlibat dalam sejumlah affair yang sedikit banyak tergambar dalam karya-karyanya. Salah satu hubungan yang patut dicatat adalah dengan penyair dan perupa Linda King. Pada 1976, Bukowski bertemu dengan Linde Lee Beighle, seorang pemilik restoran yang ingin menjadi aktris. Setelah menjalani hubungan pasang-surut, mereka menikah pada 1985. Istrinya itu digambarkan sebagai tokoh Sara dalam novel Women.

Perjalanan Karir

Sepanjang hayatnya ia menulis ribuan puisi, ratusan cerpen, dan enam novel. Karya-karyanya terhimpun dalam setidaknya enam puluh buku. Sejumlah karyanya terpublikasi dalam majalah sastra dan antologi penting. Bermula pada 1967, ia menulis kolom bertajuk "Notes of a Dirty Old Man" di sebuah koran indie di Los Angeles, Open City. Akibat kolom-kolomnya yang tajam, sengak, dal vulgar, ia masuk daftar hitam FBI. Sementara, karena tulisan-tulisannya yang oleh para kritikus digolongkan sebagai "dirty realism", pada 1986, majalah terkemuka Time menggelari Bukowski "pembela kaum rendahan Amerika".

Bukowski pernah bekerja di kantor pos sebelum kemudian memutuskan keluar untuk menulis sepenuhnya atas tawaran sebuah penerbit, Black Sparrow. Tiga bulan setelah ia keluar dari kerja tetap di kantor pos, novel pertamanya terbit, Post Office (1971). Sejumlah novelnya yang lain di antaranya Factatum (1975), Women (1978), dan Ham on Rye (1982) yang bernuansa autobiografis. Kumpulan puisinya antara lain The Last Night in The Eart Poems (1992). Adapun kumpulan cerpennya di antaranya The Most Beautiful Woman in Town (1963). Pada 1980-an, ia sempat berkolaborasi dengan komikus Robert Crumb untuk menerbitkan sejumlah komik. Pada 1987, Barfly, film semiautobiografi Bukowski dirilis dengan Mickey Rourke sebagai pemeran Henry Chinaski meski semula yang direncanakan memerankannya adalah Sean Penn. Bukowski menulis sendiri skenario film itu dan tampil cameo di dalamnya.
