Struktur tertinggi dunia pada pertengahan abad ke-20 memiliki definisi yang cukup jelas. Namun setelah saat itu terjadi banyak perdebatan dan kebingungan dari berbagai kalangan bagaimana menentukan kriteria dan definisinya. Dalam ketinggian mutlak, kebanyakan struktur tertinggi adalah menara broadcast radio dan televisi yang memiliki ketinggian sekitar 600 meter (2.000 kaki).
Hal-hal yang diperdebatkan adalah:
- apakah struktur yang disanggah - guy-wire termasuk?
- apakah ketinggian yang dapat ditinggali baru termasuk? Dan jika begitu:
- apakah galeri pengamatan dalam menara komunikasi membuat gedung itu gedung yang dapat ditinggali?
- apakah antena di atas-atap dapat dihitung?
- apakah struktur yang berada di bawah air juga dihitung ketinggiannya?
