Sapi dianggap keramat dalam agama-agama di dunia seperti Hinduisme, Jainisme, Zoroastrianisme dan lain-lain. Agama-agama awal di Mesir Kuno, Yunani Kuno, Israel Kuno dan Romawi Kuno juga memiliki kepercayaan yang sama.
