Latar belakang dan komposisi

Lovato merilis lagu ini sebagai kejutan pada 22 Juni 2023, Lovato menjelaskan asal-usulnya di media sosial: "Sudah satu tahun sejak keputusan Mahkamah Agung mencabut hak konstitusional atas aborsi yang aman, dan meskipun jalan ke depan akan menantang., kita harus terus bersatu dalam memperjuangkan keadilan reproduksi."^[1]

Lagu ini dirilis sebagai lagu protes dua hari sebelum peringatan atas satu tahunnya keputusan Mahkamah Agung untuk membatalkan Roe v. Wade.^[2] Selama periode satu tahun, laba bersih Lovato dari "Swine" akan disumbangkan ke Dana Keadilan Reproduksi Yayasan Demi Lovato, yang akan disalurkan ke tiga organisasi nirlaba: NARAL Pro-Choice America, Plan C dan National Network of Abortion Funds.^[3]

"Swine" digambarkan sebagai lagu pop-punk^[2] dan "lagu rock dan nu metal".^[4] Billboard menggambarkan lagu ini sebagai "Lovato yang paling marah", dan "dipicu oleh kemarahan yang benar".^[5]
