Lignit, sering kali disebut sebagai batubara coklat,[1] adalah sebuah batuan sedimenter coklat dan halus yang terbentuk dari gambut yang terkompres secara alami. Lignit dianggap sebagai tingkatan terrendah dari batubara karena suhu panasnya yang relatif rendah. Lignit memiliki kandungan karbon sekitar 60–70 persen.[1]
