Tengar adalah nama sekelompok tumbuhan dari genus Ceriops, suku Rhizophoraceae. Dari segi penampilan, tengar mirip dengan bakau, meski umumnya lebih kecil. Tumbuhan ini juga dikenal dengan beberapa nama lain seperti tangar, tengal, tengah, tingi, palun, parun, bido-bido dan lain-lain.

Di Indonesia dikenal dua spesiesnya. Yakni Ceriops tagal (Perr.) C.B. Rob. (kadang-kadang disebut Ceriops candolleana W.& A.), dan C. decandra (Griff.) Ding Hou yang lebih kecil.

Habitus

Spesies tengar umumnya dapat bertumbuh dengan tinggi 10–15 meter atau kurang.[butuh rujukan] Namun pada spesies Ceriops tagal, pertumbuhannya dapat mencapai 25 meter.[27] Batang menggembung di bagian pangkal, sering dengan akar tunjang yang kecil.[butuh rujukan]

Daun tunggal, bulat telur terbalik, dengan ujung tumpul atau berlekuk, mengkilap seperti kulit, terletak berhadapan, maks 4 × 10 cm. Daun penumpu kecil, 1,5 – 2,5 cm, lekas gugur, meninggalkan bekas serupa cincin.

Bunga duduk atau bertangkai pendek, dalam payung tambahan yang bertangkai, 2-4 kuntum sekelompok (C. decandra) atau 5-10 (3-9) kuntum sekelompok pada C. tagal. Bunga berbilangan 5, dengan kelopak kehijauan dan daun mahkota putih, kecoklatan bila tua. Tangkai benang sari pendek, sama atau lebih pendek (C. decandra) atau lebih panjang dari kepala sari (C. tagal). Berbunga sepanjang tahun.

Buah kecil, bentuk telur hingga mengerucut, kecoklatan, s/d 2 cm. Taju kelopak buah melengkung ke belakang. Hipokotil silindris, berkulit halus, berbintil, agak menggelembung di ujung, sekitar 15 cm (C. decandra) dan dapat mencapai 25 cm (C. tagal). Leher kotiledon berwarna merah tua (C. decandra) atau kuning (C. tagal) jika tua.

Habitat dan penyebaran

Umumnya ditemukan pada bagian yang kering dari hutan bakau, atau yang hanya tergenang pasang tinggi. Menyukai substrat pasir (terutama C. decandra) atau lumpur tanah liat, namun yang memiliki drainase yang baik. Sering pula ditemukan di sekitar tambak ikan.

C. decandra ditemukan mulai dari India hingga ke Indocina, Semenanjung Malaya, Kepulauan Nusantara, Filipina, Papua Nugini dan Australia.

C. tagal diketahui menyebar mulai dari Mozambik di Afrika, hingga ke Pasifik barat, termasuk Australia, Indonesia dan Malaysia.

Kegunaan

Tengar menghasilkan kayu yang kuat dan awet, paling kuat dari antara kayu hutan bakau lainnya. Kayu ini kerap digunakan dalam konstruksi bangunan, bantalan rel kereta api, gagang peralatan dan lain-lain. Juga merupakan bahan kayu bakar dan arang yang baik.

Kulit kayu tengar, sebagaimana kayu bakau, menghasilkan tanin yang kerap digunakan sebagai bahan penyamak kulit, dan juga bahan pewarna untuk cat.
