An indigenous Javanese caught by the amok, a specific behavior or subject, often under the influence of opium, wants to avenge the death of one of his own or an insult, goes mad and kills as much as he can until he himself is killed here by a group of man with forks. Here now is the explanation of these terrible scenes, one of which I had already witnessed in Batavia.

The Javanese, whatever they say in Europe, is generally gentle and shy. Also when he conceives the thought of a crime, he needs, to excite himself to commit it, to resort to drunkenness; he chooses the most terrible that of opium, and once under the influence of this fatal poison, he rushes, kriss in hand, on the victim who has excited his hatred and slaughtered him without pity. Alais, never satisfied by this first murder, he then begins to run at random, killing or injuring everyone he meets. Indians, drunk on opium, have been seen to murder up to fifteen and seventeen people. This is called doing amok.

As soon as the cry; Amok ! is heard in a kampong, the night watchmen and the urban guard immediately take up arms; some strike the thong-thong, others pursue the fugitive. We first make him master using these large forks which I spoke about above and which we call bandhill, and usually we execute him straight away[1].

It was only the next day that I learned the story of this amok, the name of the unfortunate madman, the cause of his crime and the number of his victims.

1. The bandhill is an extremely ingenious neutral weapon. It is a fork whose two branches are furnished with a thorny plant (doéri or duri), so that the thorns, turned in the direction of the handle, penetrate into the flesh of the patient, and not only prevent him from escape, but paralyze all his movements and render him perfectly docile. The most furious man is suddenly subdued by the horrible pain caused to him, when he is straddled by the bandhill, by the thousands of thorns which plow his ribs; he then follows like a dog the one who holds the handle of this weapon, so rightly feared by the natives. The prisoner is only released by untying the rope ties which hold the thorny reeds in question around the branches of the fork.

Le Javanais, quoi qu'on en dise en Europe, est généralement doux et timide. Aussi lorsqu'il conçoit la pensée d'un crime, a-t-il besoin, pour s'exciter à le commettre, de recourir à l'ivresse ; il choisit la plus terrible celle de l'opium, et une fois sous l'empire de ce funeste poison, il court se précipiter, le kriss à la main, sur la victime qui a excité sa haine et l'égorgé sans pitié. Alais, jamais assouvi par ce premier meurtre, il se met alors à courir au hasard, tuant ou blessant tous ceux qu'il rencontre. On a vu des Indiens, ivres d'opium, assassiner jusqu'à quinze et dix-sept personnes. C'est ce qu'on appelle faire amok.

Dès que le cri ; Amok ! se fait entendre dans un kampong, les veilleurs de nuit et la garde urbaine prennent immédiatement les armes; les uns frappent le thong-thong, les autres poursuivent le fugitif. On se rend d'abord maître de lui à l'aide de ces grandes fourches dont j'ai parlé plus haut et qu'on nomme bandhill, et ordinairement on l'exécute séance tenante[1].

Ce ne fut que le lendemain que j'appris l'histoire de cet amok, le nom du malheureux fou, la cause de son crime et le nombre de ses victimes.

1. Le bandhill est une arme neutre extrêmement ingénieuse. C'est une fourctie dont les deux branches sont garnies d'une plantp épineuse (doéri, duri), de manière à ce que les épines, tournées dans le sens du manche, pénétrent dans les chairs du patient, et nonseulement l'empêchent de s'échapper, mais paralysent tous ses mouvements et le rendent d'une docilité parfaite. L'homme le plus furieux est subitement dompté par l'horrible douleur que lui causent, quand il est enfourché par le bandhill, les milliers d'épines qui lui labourent les côtes; il suit alors comme un chien celui qui tient le manche de cette arme, redoutée à si juste titre des indigènes. On ne délivre le prisonnier qu'en dénouant les ligatures de roting qui retiennent autour ries branches de l.n fourche les joncs épineux en question.
