PS General Slocum
PS General Slocum adalah sebuah kapal uap penumpang roda samping, juga dikenal sebagai kapal uap dayung, dibangun di Brooklyn, New York tahun 1891. General Slocum dinamai untuk seorang perwira Perang Sipil dan Anggota Kongres New York, Henry Warner Slocum. Kapal ini beroperasi di wilayah New York City sebagai kapal wisata untuk 13 tahun berikutnya di bawah kepemilikan yang sama. Sepanjang sejarah operasinya, kapal ini terlibat dalam serangkaian malapraktik, termasuk banyak tabrakan dan larangan.
Pada 15 Juni 190, General Slocum terbakar dan tenggelam di East River New York.[1] Ketika kecelakaan terjadi, kapal ini sedang mengoperasikan pelayaran sewaan dengan anggota Gereja Lutheran Evangelis St. Mark (Jerman Amerika dari Little Germany, Manhattan) menuju sebuah piknik gereja. Sekitar 1.021 dari 1.342 penumpang tewas. Bencana General Slocu, adalah bencana terburuk di kawasan New York menurut jumlah korban tewas sampai terjadinya serangan 11 September 2001.[2] Peristiwa yang berhubungan dengan kebakaran General Slocum bermunculan di sejumlah buku, drama dan film sepanjang tahun.

The General Slocum was one of the best known vessels about New York Harbor. Since the time of her launching, in 1891, she has been employed in so many different capacities, and on so many different runs, that possibly five out of every ten people in New York City have at some time been aboard of her, or have seen her at close range.

Few are alive anymore who can recall June 15, 1904, when 1,021 people died in the burning of the steamer General Slocum, the deadliest New York disaster until Sept. 11, 2001.
