Eclipse 500 sangat dipasarkan sebagai jet yang sangat ringan, dan merupakan salah satu yang pertama dari jenisnya yang memasuki pasar

Pesawat jet sangat ringan atau very light jet (VLJ), sebelumnya dikenal sebagai mikrojet, adalah sebuah pesawat jet ringan yang disetujui untuk dioperasikan oleh pilot tunggal dengan bobot maksimum lepas landas/maximum take-off weight dibawah 10,000 lb (4,540 kg). Pesawat jenis ini lebih ringan dari jet bisnis biasanya hanya bertempat duduk tiga sampai tujuh penumpang ditambah satu pilot.
