Star Trek III: The Search for Spock adalah film tahun 1984 yang dirilis oleh Paramount Pictures. Film ini adalah film ketiga dari seluruh film Star Trek. Paramont membuat film ini setelah respon positif terhadap Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Leonard Nimoy menyutradarai film ini, sedangkan produser Harve Bennett menulis naskahnya. Tidak ada perubahan pada tim film. Efek spesial tetap dikerjakan oleh Industrial Light & Magic, dan semua pengambilan gambar dilaksanakan di areal Paramount dan ILM. Komposer James Horner mengembangkan tema musik film sebelumnya.

The Search for Spock dirilis pada tanggal 1 Juni 1984. Film ini memecahkan rekor Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Kritikus memberikan bermacam-macam respon terahadap film ini. Mayoritas kritikus hanya mengkritik alur cerita film ini, akan tetapi memuji pemeran film. Karena kesuksesannya, Nimoy diberi kepercayaan untuk langsung membuat Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Alur Cerita[sunting | sunting sumber]

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock dimulai dengan kematian Spock, teman Admiral James T. Kirk pada film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Jenazah Spockpun dikirim ke Planet eksperimental Genesis. Saat sampai di Bumi, Dokter Leonard McCoy berperilaku dengan aneh dan ditahan. Admiral Starfleet Morrow juga memberitahukan bahwa Enterprise dibebastugaskan dan seluruh awaknya dilarang untuk membicarakan Genesis karena telah terjadi kericuhan politik mengenai Genesis di Senat United Federation of Planets.

David Markus, anak Kirk menginvestigasi Genesis bersama dengan Saavik, seorang Vulcan. Mereka pergi dengan menumpang pesawat ilmiah Grissom. Mereka menemukan bentuk kehidupan yang tidak disangka-sangka dari permukaan Genesis. Setelah di-transport ke permukaan, ternyata Spock telah bangkit dan menjadi anak kecil, namun pikirannya kosong. Akhirnya, Marcus mengaku kepada Saavik bahwa ia menggunakan zat protomatter yang tidak stabil dalam pembuatan Planet Genesis. Akibatnya, planet tersebut mengalami penuaan yang sangat cepat dan akan kiamat dalam beberapa jam, termasuk Spock yang bertambah tua dengan sangat cepat.Sementara itu, Komandan Klingon Kruge memperoleh informasi rahasia mengenai Genesis. Ia percaya bahwa Genesis adalah senjata yang sangat potensial. Karena itu, ia menghancurkan Grissom lalu menangkap Marcus, Saavik, dan Spock.

Sarek, ayah Spock marah kepada Kirk karena Kirk meninggalkan jenazah Spock di Genesis. Namun, ia meminta maaf karena Spock ternyata tidak memberikan katranya kepada Kirk, melainkan McCoy. Apabila katra tersebut tidak dikuburkan bersama jenazah Spock di Vulcan, Spock tidak dapat beristirahat dengan tenang dan McCoy akan meninggal karena gila. Kirkpun melanggar perintah dengan melarikan McCoy, mensabotase USS Excelsior, dan mencuri Enterprise dari hanggar untuk kembali ke Genesis.

Di orbit Genesis, Enterprise diserang dan dilumpuhkan oleh Kruge. Lalu, Kruge memerintahkan anak buahnya untuk membunuh salah satu tawanan; David terbunuh saat melindungi Saavik. Kirk dan awak Enterprise menyerah dan mengaktifkan perintah penghancuran Enterprise, membunuh anak buah Kruge yang di-transport ke Enterprise. Kirk menipu Kruge dengan menjanjikan rahasia Genesis agar ia dan awak Enterprise dapat dievakuasi dari Genesis yang akan segera hancur. Awak Enterprisepun di-transport ke Bird of Prey dan Kirk mengalahkan Kruge dalam perkelahian tangan kosong setelah menendang Kruge ke jurang. Setelah menawan anak buah Kruge yang terakhir, Kirk dan awaknya terbang ke Vulcan dengan Bird of Prey.

Katra Spockpun disatukan kembali dengan tubuhnya melalui upacara berbahaya fal tor pan. Upcara tersebut berhasil dan Spock hidup kembali. Spock mulai ingat akan masa lalunya, dimulai dari memanggil Kirk "Jim".
