Metro Shanghai (atas) memiliki jalur rute terpanjang di dunia. New York City Subway (tengah) memiliki jumlah stasiun paling banyak. London Underground (bawah), dibuka tahun 1863, adalah sistem metro tertua di dunia.

Sistem Metro adalah sebuah sistem Kereta api Moda Raya Terpadu. Dalam beberapa kasus, sistem metro mengarah kepada sistem subways atau bawah tanah. Sistem metro pertama, London Underground, dibuka pada tahun 1863. Hingga 2014, terdapat sekitar 160 sistem metro di dunia. Shanghai Metro adalah sistem terpanjang dalam hal panjang rute penumpang.[1] New York City Subway memiliki stasiun terbanyak dan total jalur tepanjang, dengan total 842 mil (1.355 km), termasuk jalur non penumpang.[2]

Sebuah sistem metro didefinisikan sebagai sebuah sistem transportasi umum listrik dalam kota dengan kapasitas dan frekuensi yang tinggi, yang bebas dari gangguan lalu lintas lain, jalan maupun pejalan kaki.[3][4] Istilah kereta berat (Umumnya di Amerika Utara) dan kereta berat dalam kota sering memiliki pengertian yang sama.[5][6]

Garis pemisah antara metro dan moda transportasi umum lainnya, seperti kereta api ringan dan kereta api komuter, tidak selalu jelas. Pembeda yang sering digunakan bagi metro dari kereta api ringan adalah mengenai pemisahan dengan lalu lintas lain. Jika kereta api ringan mungkin berbagi dengan jalan atau memiliki perlintasan dengan jalan, sistem metro, hampir selalu memiliki jalur terpisah, tanpa akses untuk pejalan kaki maupun kendaraan lain. Untuk membedakan dengan kereta komuter, sistem metro digunakan di dalam kota dan memiliki frekuensi yang lebih tinggi, umumnya tidak lebih dari 10 menit pada hari normal siang hari. Lebih jauh, sebagian besar sistem metro tidak berbagi jalur dengan kereta api lain. Tidak ada pembedaan berdasarkan penggerak roda karet maupun roda baja, atau pemasok tenaga melalui rel ketiga atau kabel udara.

Tidak semua sistem memenuhi kriteria tersebut, banyak sistem metro yang berupa kereta api ringan namun memenuhi kriteria sebagai mrt. Beberapa sistem juga memiliki sistem kereta api ringan sebagai bagian dari angkutan cepat. ada beberapa sistem yang tidak dicantumkan, seperti sebuah sistem yang memnuhi kriteria frekuensi, tetapi menjangkau hingga jauh di luar kota dan lebih sesuai dengan kereta api regional atau komuter. Selain itu monorel dan kereta gantung, atau penggerak manusia, seperti di taman hiburan, resor ski, dan transportasi bandara juga tidak dicantumkan.
