HMS Curacoa adalah sebuah kapal penjelajah ringan kelas C berbobot 4.200 ton yang dibuat untuk Angkatan Laut Britania Raya dan ditempatkan menyertai Armada Besar selama hari-hari terakhir Perang Dunia I.[2] Curacoa merupakan salah satu dari lima kapal penjelajah yang termasuk dalam subkelas Ceres.[3]
Nama
[sunting | sunting sumber]Angkatan Laut Britania Raya memberi nama kapal ini Curacoa, yang diambil dari Curaçao, nama sebuah pulau di Kepulauan Karibia, Laut Karibia,[2] dan diberi nama tersebut untuk memperingati direbutnya Curaçao dari penguasaan Belanda pada tahun 1807.[1]
Desain dan deskripsi
[sunting | sunting sumber]Kapal penjelajah kelas C dimaksudkan untuk mengawal armada dan mempertahankannya dari kapal perusak musuh yang berusaha mendekat dalam jangkauan torpedo.[4] Kelas Ceres menggantikan Caledon, sebenarnya merupakan kapal penjelajah ringan standar kelas super "C" terakhir dari Angkatan Laut Britania Raya selama Perang Besar.[5]
Sama seperti Caledon dengan berat benaman 4.200 ton panjang (4.300 t) tetapi memiliki 5.020 ton panjang (5.100 t) pada muatan penuh, panjang 450 kaki 3 inci (137,2 m), lebar 43 kaki 762 inci (32,5 m), draft 14 kaki 8 inci (4,5 m).[5]
Konstruksi dan karier
[sunting | sunting sumber]Curacoa dipesan pada Maret–April 1916,[6] sebagai bagian dari Program Perang Darurat (Emergency War Programme) dan dibuat oleh HM Dockyard Pembroke dengan peletakan lunas pada 13 Juli 1916.[7] Curacoa diluncurkan pada 5 Mei 1917 sebagai kapal keempat Angkatan Laut Britania Raya yang menyandang nama "Curacoa",[7][8] yang pertama kali diperkenalkan pada tahun 1809 untuk penamaan kapal Angkatan Laut Britania Raya.[7] Curacoa masuk dalam jajaran kapal yang digunakan oleh Angkatan Laut Britania Raya pada 18 Februari 1918.[7][2] Komandan pertamanya adalah Kapten Barry Domvile.[1] Dalam tugasnya, Curacoa menjadi kapal bendera Skuadron Kapal Penjelajah Ringan ke-5, bagian dari Pasukan Harwich, yang bertugas di Harwich selama sisa waktu Perang Dunia I.[9][10]
