Rickrolling adalah sebuah meme Internet[1][2] yang melibatkan video musik lagu "Never Gonna Give You Up" oleh Rick Astley tahun 1987. Meme ini berupa bait-and-switch, yang berarti seseorang memberikan pranala yang tampak sejalan dengan topik yang dibicarakan, tetapi mengarah ke video Astley. Pranala ini dapat ditutup-tutupi sedemikian rupa sehingga pengguna tidak bisa menentukan destinasi tautan yang sebenarnya kecuali dengan mengekliknya (Teknik Bait-and-Switch). Orang yang terpancing ke video ini dikatakan telah di-rickroll. Rickrolling telah meluas hingga ke luar dunia web, termasuk ruang publik,[2] seperti kejutan rickroll oleh Astley sendiri pada Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade tahun 2008 di New York.[1] Meme ini turut membantu membangkitkan kembali karier Astley.[3]

Sejarah

Duckrolling

Sejarah Rickrolling dapat ditarik balik hingga tahun 2006. Pada saat itu, ada sebuah tren yang berkembang di 4chan, sebuah situs web imageboard, yaitu sistem pengubah kata, dan salahsatu sistem yang paling populer yaitu sistem yang mengubah kata "egg" (telur) menjadi "duck" (bebek). Oleh karena hal ini, banyak orang mendapati dirinya sendiri alih-alih mengirim kata "telur", mereka mengirim kata "bebek".

Pada suatu waktu, seorang pengguna ingin mengirim kata "eggroll" (telur gulung), lalu mendapati dirinya mengirim kata "duckroll". Tak lama kemudian, seorang anonim mem-posting gambar seekor bebek, namun kakinya diganti menjadi sebuah roda. Sejak saat itu, pengguna 4chan mulai memberikan pranala yang tampak sejalan dengan topik yang dibicarakan, tetapi, alih-alih mengarah ke video Rick Astley, pranala ini mengarah ke gambar duckroll.

Proto-Rickrolling

Menurut seorang YouTuber, Captain KRB, aksi rickrolling pertama dilakukan di dunia nyata, pada awal tahun 2007. Ini dilakukan oleh seorang YouTuber, yang memainkan lagu Never Gonna Give You Up pada saat sebuah pertandingan olahraga berlangsung.

Rickrolling pertama terjadi pada Mei 2007. Saat perilisan teaser dari permainan video Grand Theft Auto IV, banyak pengguna yang penasaran dengan konten permainannya, menyebabkan para pengguna mencari pranala tutorial mengenai permainan tersebut.
