PON III diselenggarakan di Medan, Sumatra Utara pada tanggal 20 September sampai dengan 27 September 1953. Stadion Teladan yang baru selesai dibangun dipergunakan dalam ajang olahraga ini.
PON III diadakan 2 tahun sesudah PON II yang diadakan pada tahun 1951 dan hal ini sesuai keputusan kongres PORI. Pada kongres itu diambil keputusan bahwa setiap PON berikutnya akan diadakan 4 tahun sekali dan mulai berlaku sejak PON III.
