Invasi Rusia ke Krimea 2014 dimulai pada masa setelah Revolusi Ukraina 2014 dan berpusat di semenanjung Krimea Ukraina, yang lebih dari setengah penduduknya adalah etnis Rusia. Pada bulan Februari 2014, pemerintah nasional pro-Rusia di Ukraina digulingkan dan diganti dengan satu menginginkan hubungan lebih dekat dengan Uni Eropa. Ketegangan meningkat antara Euromaidan pro-Eropa dan gerakan rakyat anti-maidan pro-Rusia didorong oleh media Rusia menghadirkan pemerintah Ukraina baru sebagai "fasis" dan "anti-Rusia" dalam referensi untuk Sektor Kanan dan Svoboda.[30][31][32][33]
Pada 6 Maret 2014, Parlemen Krimea memilih untuk meminta Rusia untuk re-unifikasi, yang jika diberikan oleh Rusia kemudian akan disampaikan kepada pemilih Krimea pada tanggal 16 Maret 2014.
