Setelah memamerkan istrinya dengan tali di lehernya, lengan, atau pinggang, suami akan menawarkan ke publik dan melakukan lelang ke penawar tertinggi. Menjual istrinya memberi latar belakang untuk novel Thomas Hardy, Walikota Casterbridge, di mana karakter sentral menjual istrinya pada awal cerita, suatu tindakan yang menghantuinya selama sisa hidupnya, dan akhirnya menghancurkan dia.
