History
Polonia airport was the site of several crashes. It is located in the center of the city of Medan (therefore precluding expansion options), has a difficult takeoff path and a short runway. The transfer to Kuala Namu Airport was planned since 1991. In a visit to Medan, Azwar Anas, Minister of Transport at the time, said that for the safety of aviation, the airport would be moved out of the city [butuh rujukan].
All preparation of construction started in 1997, but the Asian Financial Crisis that began in the same year forced the development plans to be postponed. The demands for a new airport resumed after the Mandala Airlines Flight 091 crash in September 2005 that occurred shortly after taking off from Polonia. The accident that took the life of North Sumatra Governor Tengku Rizal Nurdin also caused ground casualties, as the airport is very close to overcrowded residential areas.
All 1,365 hectares land acquisitions were done between 1995 and 1997 and had a certificate with Exploitation Right (Hak Pengelolaaan) Number-1 on November 29, 1999 and a 100 % belonged to PT Angkasa Pura II. Between 1999 and 2006 some people used a part of the land illegally as agricultural land and PT Angkasa Pura II offered them some money to move elsewhere. Construction resumed on June 29, 2006,[1] shortly before the first anniversary of the crash of Mandala Airlines Flight 091. Jusuf Kalla, vice President at the time, laid the first foundation stone.[2] These marked the construction of Kuala Namu after several years with no progress. It was predicted that the airport would be completed by 2010.[3] Because land acquisition was the biggest hurdle for this project, the airport opening date was delayed until 2013 due to lack of local government awareness.[4]
A soft opening started on July 25, 2013. The airport's first domestic departure was Garuda Indonesia flight GA 181 bound for Jakarta at 05:00 WIB. The first international departure was Indonesia AirAsia flight QZ 8078 bound for Penang at 05:15 WIB. The first domestic arrival was Lion Air flight JT 397 from Banda Aceh at 07:05 WIB. The first international arrival was Indonesia AirAsia flight QZ 8079 from Penang at 07:25 WIB.

The airport is Indonesia's second largest, after Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, with a 224,298 m² passengers terminal[7] and will eventually have a capacity of 50 million passengers (2030), a figure if realised today would place the airport in the top 10 busiest by passenger numbers in the world, although by the time this figure is achieved it is likely that there will be many airports carrying more passengers.[8]
It contains a 3,750 x 60 m runway, also another parallel taxi-way 3,750 m and 2,000 m (each with wide 30 m) that can accommodate wide-body aircraft, including the Airbus A380.[9][10] It also includes an apron area measuring 664 m² capable of handling 33 aircraft. It also has a 13,000 m² cargo area that can handle 3 carriers with 65,000 tonnes/annum and 50,820 m² parking capacity with 405 taxis, 55 busses, and 908 cars. For more accessibility, the airport will have 10 door gates, another highway (non-toll road), toll road, and non-stop rail link to Medan.[11][12]
Spread on 1,365 ha land area, 20 km North East of Polonia airport, 3 km from the sea, and on a site of area 6,5 x 2,1 km.[13] Phase 1 (2010) of the new airport plans for a capacity to serve 9 million passengers annually and predicted to operate the airport by the end of 2012.[14] By Phase 2 (2017), the airport would be servicing 16 million passengers, 4,5 million international, and 2,63 million international transit passengers.[15]
It has been predicted all of the land will be cleared before end of 2012 when 'shadow operation' begins.[16] The other problems are runway construction which has schedule to finish 18 months after the project started on January 2011, infrastructure building and power generator installment.[17] The airport will cost at least $4,4 billion, using the August 2007 exchange rate.[18]
Operations
Airside facilities would be controlled by the Indonesian government, while landside facilities would be owned by a joint venture with PT Angkasa Pura II, which is expected to provide $350 million as an initial investment in return for a 30-year lease, after which ownership would revert to PT Angkasa Pura II. The airport will be linked to the city of Medan by a $10,7 million railway project.[19] A highway about 18 km also being planned to connect the airport to Medan. It will cost $1,5 billions and eventually have 4 interchanges, 4 underpasses, 7 topperpasses, and 3 toll gates.[20]
The airport is the first in Indonesia with a publicly accessible check-in area (current Indonesian airports restrict access to ticket holders with security at the gate). This means a much larger and more spacious check-in area than the existing airport. The airport is being designed by Wiratman & Associates, who also designed several other new airports and office buildings in Indonesia. Train
Train services is provided by Railink, a joint venture between Angkasa Pura II and Indonesian Railway. It is the first integrated airport rail link in Indonesia, city check-in and electronic tickets are also available for convenience.[5] Online reservation were also available for booking. Train services will cost you IDR 80,000 or about $8. The trains and equipment are made in South Korea.[6]
Since 14 November 2013, the train runs 18 daily return trips with first trip from Medan Main Station beside the Merdeka Square at Balai Kota Street at 04:00 a.m. and the last trip from the airport at 11:30 p.m. It is the fastest way to reach the airport, taking about 37 to 45 minutes.

Bus
A state-owned bus company DAMRI operates services to the airport since the airport started operating. The DAMRI bus has only two bus shelters in Medan, on Gatot Subroto next to Plaza Medan Fair and at Amplas bus terminal. It needs about 60 to 90 minutes to reach the airport. The fare is cheaper than train ride to city.

Taxi will cost you about 2 train tickets fare per taxi. Passenger are encouraged to use taxi with meter to avoid scam.
Regional hub
Kuala Namu International Airport is plotted to be a Regional Hub as South Korea's Incheon International Airport sister airport, so on June 25, 2012 an agreement has been signed of both party operators. Incheon operator will assist Kuala Namu operator to become Regional Hub with world-class standards.[27]
Accidents and incidents
- On Saturday, 18 May 2013, a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 737-400 that was supposed to land at Polonia International Airport,
almost landed in not yet opened/ready Kuala Namu International Airport. The plane had not yet landed, but the aircraft landing gear and flaps
were already extended. Once the pilot realized that the airport he was going to land on was wrong, he immediately initiated a go-around. The plane landed at Polonia International Airport safely.
