Kehidupan dan karir[sunting | sunting sumber]
Akira Tsuburaya lahir pada tanggal 12 Februari 1944[3] di Tokyo.[1] Dia adalah putra ketiga dari perintis efek khusus Eiji Tsuburaya dan istrinya Masano Araki serta anak pertama mereka yang dibaptis.[3] Selama berkuliah di Universitas Tamagawa, Tsuburaya memulai karirnya dengan bekerja dalam film di perusahaan ayahnya Tsuburaya Productions pada episode Ultra Q yang populer di dalam negeri, "Kanegon's Cocoon" sebagai asisten sutradara pada tahun 1965.[2] Ia kemudian kembali bekerja sebagai asisten sutradara dalam episode Ultra Q "Challenge From the Year 2020" dan tahun berikutnya bekerja di posisi yang sama dalam Ultraman (TV 1966-1967). Ia kemudian menjabat sebagai asisten sutradara utama efek khusus dalam Ultraseven (TV 1967) serta asisten direktur dalam Operation: Mystery! (1968).[2]
Tsuburaya mulai bekerja sebagai produser pada tahun 1970, menerima kredit pertamanya di posisi itu dalam Chibira-kun di tahun yang sama.[1] Ia terus bekerja di Tsuburaya Productions dalam produksi seperti Triple Fighter (1972), Fireman (1973) Army of the Apes, Pro-Wrestling Star Aztecaser Ultraman Leo (1974), Dinosaur War Izenborg (1977), dan Star Wolf (1978)[4] sampai meninggalkan perusahaan tersebut pada bulan Juni 1989.[1]
Pada Juli 1989, sebulan setelah keluar, ia mendirikan Tsuburaya Eizo.[1] Ia menjadi produser eksekutif untuk banyak acara televisi oleh perusahaannya, termasuk Babel II: Beyond Infinity (2001) dan Genma Wars: Eve of Mythology (2002).[5] Pada Februari 2002, ia bergabung kembali dengan Tsuburaya Productions dan menjadi kepala departemen produksi sebagai wakil presiden. Namun, pada Mei 2005, ia meninggalkan Tsuburaya Productions sekali lagi dan diangkat sebagai direktur Tsuburaya Dream Factory pada bulan Juni itu.[1]
