Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) merupakan situs web yang dikelola oleh NASA dan Michigan Technological University (MTU). Konten dalam situs web ini berisi "gambar atau foto yang berbeda setiap harinya, menampilkan keindahan alam semesta kita beserta penjelasan singkat yang ditulis oleh seorang astronom profesional."[1] Foto yang ditampilkan dalam situs web APOD tidaklah selalu menampilkan peristiwa langit pada hari yang sama.[2] Meskipun demikian, gambar dan penjelasan yang ditampilkan berhubungan dengan peristiwa astronomi dan eksplorasi ruang angkasa terkini. Penjelasan foto memiliki beberapa tautan menuju gambar-gambar dan situs web lain untuk informasi lebih lanjut. Gambar-gambar yang muncul dalam APOD meliputi foto dalam spektrum kasatmata, foto dalam panjang gelombang tak kasatmata, foto yang ditampilkan dalam warna semu, rekaman video, animasi, konsepsi seni, atau mikrograf yang berhubungan dengan luar angkasa atau kosmologi. Gambar-gambar lama disimpan di Arsip APOD, dengan gambar pertama terbit pada 16 Juni 1995. Pembuatan situs web ini telah menerima dukungan dari NASA, National Science Foundation, dan MTU. Gambar-gambar dalam situs web ini terkadang berasal dari orang atau organisasi di luar NASA, dan oleh karena itu gambar APOD seringkali memiliki hak cipta, tidak seperti banyak galeri gambar NASA lainnya.[3]

Pada hari pertamanya, situs web APOD hanya dilihat sebanyak 14 kali. Namun seiring dengan meningkatnya popularitas, situs web ini menerima hingga lebih dari satu miliar tampilan pada 2012. APOD juga diterjemahkan ke dalam 21 bahasa setiap harinya, termasuk Bahasa Indonesia.[4]

APOD dipresentasikan pada pertemuan American Astronomical Society pada tahun 1996.[5] Praktiknya yang menggunakan hypertext[2] dianalisis dalam sebuah makalah ilmiah pada tahun 2000.[6] Situs web APOD juga menerima Penghargaan Scientific American untuk situs web sains dan teknologi pada tahun 2001.[7] Pada tahun 2002, situs web ini ditampilkan dalam wawancara dengan Nemiroff di acara CNN Saturday Morning News.[8] Pada tahun 2003, kedua penulis APOD menerbitkan buku berjudul The Universe: 365 Days[9] melalui penerbit Harry N. Abrams. Buku tersebut berisi kumpulan gambar terbaik dari APOD yang dikemas sebakai buku hardcover gaya "meja kopi". APOD menjadi Koleksi Pilihan dalam majalah D-Lib edisi November 2004.[10]

Robert J. Nemiroff dan Dr. Jerry T. Bonnell dianugerahi Penghargaan Klumpke-Roberts 2015 oleh Astronomical Society of the Pacific "untuk kontribusi yang luar biasa bagi pemahaman dan apresiasi publik terhadap astronomi" sebagai apresiasi terhadap kerja keras mereka di APOD.[11][12]

Sejak 15 Juli 2017, APOD Indonesia telah resmi menjadi situs mirror APOD berbahasa Indonesia yang diakui oleh APOD. Situs web ini dikelola oleh InfoAstronomy.org bersama empat orang penerjemah. Selain situs web, APOD berbahasa Indonesia juga tersedia di Instagram.[13]
