Kehidupan awal

Lahir di Clinton, Massachusetts, putra dari pasangan Larkin Harry Brown (1866-1942) seorang pengusaha kapas dan Katherine Ann Brown (née Gaw) (1865-1954), Brown pindah ke Tennessee saat berusia 11 tahun. Ia masuk Knoxville High School dan University of Tennessee, keduanya di Knoxville, Tennessee, lulus dari universitas tersebut pada usia 19 tahun dengan dua gelar dalam bidang teknik.
