Josiah Dwight Whitney (23 November 1819 – 18 Agustus 1896) adalah seorang geolog Amerika Serikat, profesor geologi di Universitas Harvard (sejak 1865), dan ketua Badan Survei Geologi California (1860–1874). Disamping perjalanan dan kajiannya dalam wilayah-wilayah pertambangan utama Amerika Serikat, Whitney menjadi otoritas terdepan pada masanya perihal geologi ekonomi AS.
