Delores LaVern Baker (November 11, 1929 – March 10, 1997) adalah seorang penyanyi R&B asal Amerika Serikat yang berhasil memiliki beberapa lagu hits di tangga musik tahun 1950an dan awal 1960an. Lagunya yang paling sukses adalah "Tweedle Dee" (1965), "Jim Dandy" (1956), dan "I Cried a Tear" (1958).

Kehidupan awal[sunting | sunting sumber]

Baker dilahirkan dengan nama Delores Evans di Chicago.[1] Beberapa sumber menyebutnya sebagai Delores Williams, nama yang ia gunakan ketika masa awal pernikahannya dengan Eugene Williams.[2][3]

Karier[sunting | sunting sumber]

Baker mulai bernyanyi di klub-klub di Chicago seperti di Club DeLisa pada sekitar tahun 1946, dan sering disebut sebagai Little Miss Sharecropper,[4] dan kemudian ia pun menggunakan nama tersebut dalam album rekamannya pada 1949. Ia mengubah namanya menjadi Bea Baker ketika merekam album untuk Label Rekaman Okeh pada 1951 dan lalu menjadi LaVern Baker ketika ia bernnyanyi dengan Todd Rhodes dalam bandnya pada 1952.[2]

Pada tahun 1953 ia menandatangani kontrak dengan Label Rekaman Atlantic sebagai artis solo, dengan lagu pertamanya "Soul on Fire". Lagu hitsnya datang pada 1955, yaitu lagu "Tweedle Dee" dengan tempo Latin. Lagu tersebut meraih nomor 4 di tangga musik R&B dan nomor 14 di tangga musik nasional pop Amerika Serikat.

Georgia Gibbs menyanyikan kembali lagu tersebut dan meraih nomor 1, kemudian membuat Baker menuntutnya dan mengirim petisi ke Kongres AS untuk mempertimbangkan pelanggaran hak cipta terhadap lagu cover. Baker tidak memenangkan tuntutannya itu.[5][6]

Kematian[sunting | sunting sumber]

Baker meninggal karena penyakit kardiovaskular pada 10 Maret 1997, saat berumur 67 tahun. Ia dimakamkan di sebuah plot tanah tak bertanda di Maple Grove Cemetery, in Kew Gardens, New York. Sejarawan lokal di sana menggalang dana untuk membeli nisan yang dipasang pada 4 Mei 2008.[7]
