Lenny Welch (lahir 31 Mei 1938)[1] adalah seorang penyanyi dan musisi berkebangsaan Amerika Serikat.
Kehidupan awal[sunting | sunting sumber]
Lenny Welch lahir di New York City, dan dibesarkan di Asbury Park, New Jersey, oleh orang tuanya, Eva dan Robert Richardson. Dia bersekolah di Asbury Park High School. Apabila dia berusia 16 tahun, Welch berpartisipasi dalam latihan awal The Mar-Keys di Asbury Park, pertama kalinya Welch bernyanyi untuk orang lain.

Karier Lenny Welch sebagai penyanyi utama bermula pada tahun 1960 apabila dia menandatangani kontrak dengan Cadence Records.
Sebuah lagu signature dari Lenny Welch, sebuah versi kover dari lagu Big Band, "Since I Fell for You," berada di posisi keempat di Billboard Hot 100 pada tahun 1963, terjual satu juta kopi.[2] Lagu-lagu signature dari Lenny Welch lainnya termasuk "Ebb Tide" dan "You Don't Know Me."[1] Welch juga merekam versi vokal pertama dari lagu "A Taste of Honey" pada tahun 1962 (direkam sebelum sebuah band dengan nama yang sama yang terkenal lewat singel "Boogie Oogie Oogie" didirikan).
Lenny Welch tampil sebagai bagian dari pertunjukan Natal Murray the K pada tanggal 18 Desember 1965 di Brooklyn Fox Theater. Turut tampil dalam ajang itu adalah Peter and Gordon, The Fortunes, The McCoys, The Moody Blues, The O'Jays, The Spinners, The Toys, Wilson Pickett, dan lain-lain.[3]
Welch membawakan tema serial televisi CBS, Coronet Blue (1967). Welch menata ulang lagu "Breaking Up is Hard to Do" dari Neil Sedaka sebagai sebuah balada sentimental, yang masuk Top 40 pada tahun 1970; Sedaka merekam ulang lagu tersebut dalam gaya Welch untuk masuk Top 10 pada tahun 1975.[4]

Selepas karier rekaman Welch selesai, dia melanjutkan pendidikannya, bersekolah malam selepas mengemudikan sebuah taksi di siang bolong. Dia pertama kali meraih gelar kesetaraan sekolah menengah atas, kemudian lulus dari College of New Rochelle dengan gelar sarjana. Dia juga mulai bernyanyi untuk iklan, pertama untuk Subaru dan kemudian untuk produk-produk seperti, antara lain, Coca-Cola dan M&M's.
Dari tahun 1990 sampai dengan 1991, Welch bergabung bersama The Royal All Stars (The Doo Wop All Stars), "supergrup" pertama yang didirikan dengan mempertemukan penyanyi dari berbagai kumpulan untuk tampil. Kumpulan ini terdiri dari Welch, Vito Balsamo dari Vito & the Salutations, Artie Loria dari The Earls, Randy Silverman dari The Impalas dan Eugene Pitt dari The Jive Five. Mereka menjadi andalan di sirkuit "Doo Wop" dan melakukan tur tanpa henti pada tahun-tahun seterusnya.
