Fabaceae, suku polong-polongan atau suku kacang-kacangan adalah salah satu suku tumbuhan dikotil yang terpenting dan terbesar. Banyak tumbuhan budi daya penting termasuk dalam suku ini, dengan bermacam-macam kegunaan: biji, buah (polong), bunga, kulit kayu, batang, daun, umbi, hingga akarnya digunakan manusia. Bahan makanan, minuman, bumbu masak, zat pewarna, pupuk hijau, pakan ternak, bahan pengobatan, hingga racun dihasilkan oleh anggota-anggotanya. Semua tumbuhan anggota suku ini memiliki satu kesamaan yang jelas: buahnya berupa polong.

Fabaceae pernah dikenal dengan nama Leguminosae serta Papilionaceae. Nama yang terakhir ini kurang tepat, dan sekarang dipakai sebagai nama salah satu subsukunya. Dalam dunia pertanian tumbuhan anggota suku ini sering kali disebut sebagai tanaman legum (legume).

Anggota suku ini juga dikenal karena kemampuannya mengikat (fiksasi) nitrogen langsung dari udara (tidak melalui cairan tanah) karena bersimbiosis dengan bakteri tertentu pada akar atau batangnya. Jaringan yang mengandung bakteri simbiotis ini biasanya menggelembung dan membentuk bintil-bintil. Setiap jenis biasanya bersimbiosis pula dengan jenis bakteri yang khas pula.

Bunga tipe kupu-kupu dimiliki oleh Faboideae. 1. bendera (vexillum), 2. sayap (alae, sepasang), 3. lunas (carina, melindungi benang sari dan putik).

Suku besar ini terbagi menjadi 3 subfamili, yaitu Faboideae (atau Papilionoideae, tumbuhan berbunga kupu-kupu), Caesalpinioideae, dan Mimosoideae.

Faboideae[sunting | sunting sumber]

Faboideae dapat dikatakan sebagai kelompok kacang-kacangan atau polong-polongan. Bunganya bertipe kupu-kupu, zigomorf, khas dengan mahkota bunga yang tidak sama bentuknya. Mahkota termodifikasi menjadi tiga bagian: bendera, sayap (alae), dan lunas (carina). Bagian lunas melindungi organ seksual benang sari dan putik. Karena terlindungi inilah tumbuhan kacang-kacangan biasanya merupakan tumbuhan berpenyerbukan sendiri. Bunga biasanya tunggal dengan polong biasanya berbentuk silinder.

Semua legum yang berupa terna atau tumbuhan merambat dapat dipakai sebagai pupuk hijau. Namun ada beberapa yang disukai karena pertumbuhannya yang pesat dan menutupi tanah, dan dijuluki legum cover crops (LCC, tanaman legum penutup tanah)

Tumbuhan legum dikenal kemampuannya mengambil nitrogen dalam bentuk N2 langsung dari udara, selain cara konvensional dalam bentuk nitrat atau amonium dari cairan tanah. Kemampuan ini dimiliki karena mereka bersimbiosis dengan bakteri tertentu yang menghuni jaringan-jaringan tertentu, biasanya di akar, tetapi ada beberapa yang menghuni jaringan parenkim di batang. Bagian yang dihuni bakteri ini biasanya terlihat sebagai bintil-bintil.

Setiap spesies tumbuhan hanya efektif bersimbiosis dengan spesies bakteri yang khas, dengan demikian hubungannya bersifat sangat spesifik. Misalnya, kedelai hanya efektif bersimbiosis dengan Bradyrhizobium japonicum. Infeksi dengan bakteri lain selalu gagal atau hanya menghasilkan sedikit bintil.

Simbiosis ini telah dipelajari secara mendalam dan mekanismenya telah banyak diungkap. Hal ini dilakukan untuk mencari kemungkinan memperluas simbiosis pada kelompok tumbuhan bermanfaat lainnya, karena kemampuan mengikat nitrogen dari udara berarti mengurangi pemberian pupuk N (misalnya urea, ZA, atau KNO3) secara nyata.
