Reaksi konjugasi itu disebut reaksi glusuronidasi, yang biasa terjadi pada lintasan detoksifikasi dengan variasi enzim detoks lain seperti sitokrom P450 dan glutathion S-transferase.

Manusia dengan tingkat glusuronidasi yang rendah, memiliki risiko kanker yang lebih tinggi, karena senyawa hidrokarbon poliaromatik memerlukan konjugasi asam glusuronat agar dapat menjadi inaktif.

UGT-1A1 merupakan enzim utama yang berperan pada proses glusuronidasi estradiol,[3] dengan peningkatan aktivitas pada kanker payudara dan hepatokarsinoma
