Pendidikan di Yunani Kuno "didemokratisasi" pada abad ke-5 SM, dipengaruhi oleh Sofis, Plato dan Isokrates. Kemudian, pada zaman Helenistik dari Yunani Kuno, pendidikan di sekolah gimnasium dianggap esensial terutama dalam budaya Yunani. Nilai pendidikan fisik bagi bangsa Yunani dan Romawi kuno secara historis telah menjadi kekhasan.
