Academy Award untuk Sutradara Terbaik (secara resmi dikenal sebagai Academy Award untuk Penyutradaraan Terbaik) adalah sebuah penghargaan yang dipersembahkan setiap tahun oleh Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Penghargaan tersebut diberikan untuk menghormati seorang sutradara yang menampilkan penyutradaraan menarik saat berkarya dalam industri film.

Acara Academy Awards ke-1 diadakan pada 1929 dimana penghargaan tersebut dipisah dalam kategori "Drama" dan "Komedi"; Frank Borzage dan Lewis Milestone menang masing-masing untuk Seventh Heaven dan Two Arabian Knights.[1] Namun, kategori-kategori tersebut digabung pada acara-acara berikutnya.[2] Nominasi-nominasinya ditentukan oleh pemungutan suara berpindah tunggal pada cabang sutradara-sutradara dari AMPAS; para pemenang dipilih oleh suara pluralitas dari para anggota yang dianggap layak memberikan suara dari Academy.[3][4][5]

Untuk sebelas tahun pertama Academy Awards, para sutradara diperbolehkan mendapatkan nominasi untuk film berganda pada tahun yang sama. Setelah penominasian Michael Curtiz untuk dua film, Angels with Dirty Faces dan Four Daughters, di Academy Awards ke-11, peraturan direvisi sehingga setiap individu hanya dapat dinominasikan untuk satu film pada setiap acara.[6] Meskipun perusahaan diamendemenkan, satu-satunya sutradara yang meraih nominasi berganda dalam tahun yang sama adalah Steven Soderbergh untuk Erin Brockovich dan Traffic pada 2000, dan memenangkan penghargaan tersebut untuk film Traffic. Academy Awards untuk Sutradara Terbaik dan Film Terbaik sangat berkaitan sepanjang sejarah mereka. Dari 88 film yang dianugerahi Film Terbaik, 63 film juga dianugerahi Sutradara Terbaik.[7] Sejak pembentukannya, penghargaan tersebut telah diberikan kepada 69 sutradara atau tim penyutradaraan. John Ford telah meraih penghargaan terbanyak dalam kategori tersebut dengan empat kemenangan. William Wyler dinominasikan dua belas kali, lebih banyak ketimbang orang lainnya. Pada acara 2017, Damien Chazelle adalah pemenang paling terkini dalam kategori tersebut untuk karyanya pada La La Land. Dua tim penyutradaraan berbagi penghargaan tersebut; Robert Wise dan Jerome Robbins untuk West Side Story pada 1960 dan Joel dan Ethan Coen untuk No Country for Old Men pada 2007. Coen bersaudara adalah satu-satunya kaka beradik yang memenangkan penghargaan tersebut.[8]

Pada tabel berikut ini, tahun-tahun didaftarkan menurut tahun konvensi Academy, dan umumnya ditujukan kepada tahun rilis film di Kabupaten Los Angeles, California; acara-acara tersebut selalu diadakan pada tahun berikutnya.[9] Untuk lima acara pertama, periode penentuan berlangsung selama dua belas bulan dari 1 Agustus sampai 31 Juli.[10] Pada acara ke-6 yang diadakan pada 1934, periode penentuan berlangsung dari 1 Agustus 1932 sampai 31 Desember 1933.[10] Sejak acara ke-7 yang diadakan pada 1935, periode penentuan berlangsung selama setahun kalender penuh pada tahun sebelumnya dari 1 Januari sampai 31 Desember.[10]
